Gone are the days when a grand entryway was a symbol of wealth and status. With the long awaited Barbie movie blowing up the big screen, I've been asked a lot about "barbiecore" inteior design. To be honest, it does make me cringe a bit, but I can see how Barbie inspiration has infected our daily lives. interior design is no exception – the combination of pink colors and the use of luxurious materials has been labeled as "Barbiecore". When not executed correctly, Barbiecore inspired interiors can come off as tacky. If you are considering this trend for your next interior project, I've rounded up some tips to help you achieve Barbiecore interior design that is tasteful and sophisticated. Opt for a Pink Color Palette with Neutral Accents The key to achieving a Barbiecore interior design while still keeping it sophisticated is to stick to a palette of soft pinks and neutral accents. Soft pinks, mixed with blues and oranges, will bring a touch of Barbie to your space while maintaining an understated elegance. On the other hand, opting for neutral color accents, like beige, white, or gray, will make your space look luxurious and provide balance. Incorporate Sophisticated Furniture Pieces When it comes to furnishings, it is imperative that you choose luxurious and elegant pieces. In particular, I recommend furniture with soft edges and plush textures such as velvet. A great option would be tufted pink velvet sofas and chairs that offer a comfortable and stylish seating arrangement. You can also add bright pops...

Top NY Interior Designers unveil designs for DXV Design Panel Kati Curtis Design and other Top NY Interior Designers unveiled their designs for the DXV Design Panel this past Tuesday! Kati was honored to be one of only four designers to be selected to join the prestigious panel, made up of top interior designers from around the country. It Started With Morocco We were given The Golden Era line from DXV for our city inspiration. Kati felt nothing evoked the golden era more than the glamorous and exotic city of Casablanca, Morocco! Having traveled there in early February, she was inspired by the contrasts - the mix of the old and the new, the refined and the raw. Creating a respite from the bustling medinas, Kati created a hammam-style spa. Utilizing handcrafted Moroccan tiles from Mosaic House, we set an ancient stage, but added contemporary elements like the a modern vanity to bring the scene into the 21st century. Kati noted while traveling in Morocco that the hammam, while an ancient tradition, is still a very modern social pastime. Designing a room inspired by Casablanca had the potential of being busy and overwhelming. But Kati created a truly serene space. She kept the color palette fairly muted and selected faucets from the Keefe® Collection in a matte black finish. “There’s an inherent beauty in the faucets themselves—solid and architectural. They really pop against the tile.” Kati continues, "I love things that have longevity,...
This week on LXTV's Open House New York Kati walks you through our Chelsea interior design project. The home is filled with bold color and patterns with global influences. This was a white box begging for warmth. We created that with walnut wood in the kitchen, then added more with the colorful marble with its green, gold, brown specks. The walls? We left them completely absolutely white– a virgin canvas that gave us the chance to add more colors within the room. And then we looked up. And wondered what to do with the living room’s (very) large expanse of ceiling? The answer: a Venetian plaster ceiling, adding a subtle textural element in the room. The contrast of the raw and edgy with the refined and the beautiful—the kind of beauty that stops us flat in our tracks (and sometime takes our breath away, too) Here, we did that in the largest statement possible: the staircase through the penthouse. We took it from its stark, gloss white form and brought it back to its original, striking architectural feature of blackened steel– highlighting the rawness of the structure against the refined elements in this beautiful penthouse. It’s a home that reflects the open, adventurous spirit of the client. Here is the Open House New York feature.
Paris Deco Off is an annual event where the world’s most distinguished wallpaper and fabric showrooms exhibit their newest collections. (Find out more here!) We hit the fabric houses with a vengeance, attempting to see absolutely everything and everyone that was new and exciting for the Spring collections. Since we're known for our ability to incorporate global patterns and styles in our interiors, we naturally gravitated towards the abundance of Indian, Moorish and Chinese influences showcased in this years collections at Paris Deco Off. Birds, animals, and Chinese porcelain patterns were seen everywhere, from fabrics, to wallpapers, to painted furniture. Nowhere was this global influence trend more beautifully executed than in Pierre Frey’s new Maoming collection. Inspired by travels in the Guizhou Province of China, the line evokes the artistry, craftsmanship and know-how of the Miao women. The collection’s colorful ikats, batiks and geometrical embroideries and corresponding wallpapers and rugs, are a true work of art! It was hard to not leave with one of every single pattern. You'll be sure (as per usual) to see a lot of these influences in our upcoming projects! Thanks for reading, and we will see you next week for more inspiration and design.
In January, we joined thousands of other interior design professionals and enthusiasts from around the globe at Maison et Objet, a biannual design fair that takes place in the chic capital of the world: Paris. The fair showcases all that is brand new in the home furniture, accessories, and tableware world and sets the tone for the season’s interior design trends. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorite trends from the show: Blush pink: The Pantone Color of 2016 officially known as Rose Quartz, is still taking center stage. Seen in upholstery fabrics, wall coverings, accessories, and even paint color, this feminine, soft, and yet luscious tone; gives us all sorts of warm and fuzzy feelings. Flora and fauna: Going beyond the animal print, which has been a ubiquitous trend for many years, animals invade the interior design world in full force in other fun and unexpected shapes and forms: from playful taxidermy to bunny-shaped lamps and illustrations on tableware, fabrics, and wallcovering, there's an abundance of options for those wanting to incorporate fauna in their interiors. (We prefer our taxidermy of the faux variety....but real was seen as well!) Fringe binge: A constant on SS16 fashion runways from Paris to New York, the trend has officially cast its spell on interior designers as well. Fringes are cleverly employed to upholstery pieces, chairs, and even mirrors in ways we've never seen before to suit the current preference. We...
