Gone are the days when a grand entryway was a symbol of wealth and status. Nowadays, modern design trends prioritize practicality, space efficiency, and a seamless connection between the entryway and the rest of your home. If you're looking to update your entryway, it's important to know the interior design trends to avoid that can consume valuable space and compromise your living experience. In this guide, we'll go over some entryway trends to avoid and offer tips on how to create a welcoming and inviting entryway that suits your lifestyle. Here are interior design trends to avoid for entryways: Large, extravagant, two or three-story grand entry halls were popular in the past, but now they're outdated and impractical. These types of entryways can consume valuable usable space, making it challenging to blend them with the rest of your home. They can also be a hassle to maintain and decorate, particularly for people who want to infuse their personality into the space. Instead, modern design trends lean toward creating welcoming, inviting entryways that flow seamlessly into the rest of the home. Contemporary design values practicality, efficiency, and a seamless connection between the entryway and the rest of the home. In addition to the grand entryways, white and monochromatic entryways are an Interior design trends to avoid. With the long awaited Barbie movie blowing up the big screen, I've been asked a lot about "barbiecore" inteior design. To be honest, it does make me cringe a bit, but I can see how Barbie inspiration has infected our daily lives. interior design is no exception – the combination of pink colors and the use of luxurious materials has been labeled as "Barbiecore". When not executed correctly, Barbiecore inspired interiors can come off as tacky. If you are considering this trend for your next interior project, I've rounded up some tips to help you achieve Barbiecore interior design that is tasteful and sophisticated. Opt for a Pink Color Palette with Neutral Accents The key to achieving a Barbiecore interior design while still keeping it sophisticated is to stick to a palette of soft pinks and neutral accents. Soft pinks, mixed with blues and oranges, will bring a touch of Barbie to your space while maintaining an understated elegance. On the other hand, opting for neutral color accents, like beige, white, or gray, will make your space look luxurious and provide balance. Incorporate Sophisticated Furniture Pieces When it comes to furnishings, it is imperative that you choose luxurious and elegant pieces. In particular, I recommend furniture with soft edges and plush textures such as velvet. A great option would be tufted pink velvet sofas and chairs that offer a comfortable and stylish seating arrangement. You can also add bright pops...

Although I like to think that we create "timeless" interiors, everyone want to know what we think is IN or OUT at the beginning of the year. While I hope we're trend-less, it's true that we can't help but be influenced by what's available in the marketplace. Here's our Round-Up of What's IN and What's OUT for modern Interior Design Trends: In Chinoiserie: Seen everywhere lately from our Kips Bay room to the Whitby Hotel - chinoiserie is making a comeback in a big way. Whether wallpaper, fabric, or Chinese porcelain, Chinoiserie adds depth and interest to any space. I feel its so popular now because people are looking for something unique, handmade, and full of exotic fantasy! Memphis style: The '80s hype is back!! The popularity of the Ettore Sottsass exhibit at the Met Breuer was indication that people are ready for this epic look again. In smaller doses that is... We're using an iconic chair, accessory or light fixture as a nod to the post-modern! The Mtv generation is ready to have some fun again. We're not looking for full-on Memphis like Karl Lagerfeld's Paris apartment of the '80s, but carefully executed can this modern interior design trend can add interest and impact. Colored glass: As lighting or accessories, colored glass is everywhere. We are using colored glass chandeliers in almost all of our projects, both in bold and subtle hues. Ceramics: There seems to be a resurgence of pottery as a collectible item. People are...
Here at Kati Curtis Design we're off to an amazing start for 2018 and have so many new interior design projects to share this coming year! While I'm excited about new work, I'm really more excited about the relationships with our clients. We have everyone from a young couple starting a new life together, to a couple with older kids from Chile who want to spend more of their spare time in NYC. Working closely together we can create something amazing and perfect for these incredible families. For me its all about making a difference in people's lives! (and beautiful wallpaper of course....:)) 1st on deck is a new construction project in Rye, NY for an amazing young couple starting a new life outside of NYC in the suburbs closer to His family. Building a house from scratch is a 1st for these two, and while kids aren't in the picture right now, we're designing the house to eventually be family friendly. They currently have an odd-couple pair of pooches - a husky and a toy poodle who we're already designing for! Next we have an incredible old house in Wilmington, DE that we're de-bachelorizing for a guy who now has a wife and 2 (totally adorable) young kids. There was a lot of brown... in the old design, so we're lightening, brightening, and adding our signature color and pattern to give the home a bit of a new identity....
Last week, Interior Design masters from around the country came out for the New York Design Center's event of the season - What's New What's Next. I was part of an esteemed panel of interior designers from around the country speaking about the latest in technology for interior designers. The panel was held at the Odegard showroom, was organized by our friends at Dering Hall and included Joe Human, Paloma Contreras, Patrick Dragonette, and our moderator Dennis Sarlo. We had a very interesting conversation about the intersection of design and technology. I'm so honored that NYDC picked Kati Curtis Design to be a part of this discussion with such incredible interior design masters! See highlights of our talk below and be sure to share with us any questions you might have about technology in design! This was such a fantastic conversation, and so timely in today's world. We all are so passionate about the future of design. Thank you to NYDC for having me and for bringing this topic to light for so many aspiring designers and master designers alike. And be sure to follow us on Instagram to see what we're up to and all of our newest projects! photo credit: ©MatthewCarasella.com
11 Beach Street Interior Design If you follow us on Instagram, you've probably seen more than a few  previews for our 11 Beach Street interior design and renovation!! 11 Beach is a new building designed by BKSK and Thomas Juul-Hansen, and we are making our magic on one of the full-floor units. Working with our friends at Best and Company, we're adding millwork, all new lighting, a tracery ceiling in the main living space, and furnishing the home top to bottom for a beautiful family relocating to NYC from Toronto, Canada. You can view the renderings we did of the interior spaces in the Portfolio section of our website, but the fun part is not so much the pretty pictures, but the process we went through to get to the construction stage. The client is based in Toronto, CA, and contracted us to handle all aspects of the project - from the architecture of the space to the decorative finishes and furnishings. Since we're the feet on the ground, we're the client's eyes and ears, making sure every little detail is attended to so they can just show up and enjoy their new life in NYC. The Great Room The Great Room design (shown above), includes a walled enclosure that we added to the previously open plan space. The Clients cook a lot, so they wanted to be able to separate off the kitchen area, but keep the visual openness...
