After spending a much needed break in the Delaware River Valley, I think I actually learned a few things about what's essential for a country home. Having lived in both San Francisco and New York over the past 12 years, I've unfortunately not spent too much time outside of an urban environment. Here are our must-haves for practical, yet glamorous country living:
1. Reclaimed wood floors:
LV Wood Floors carries some of the most beautiful FSC Certified, reclaimed wood flooring. I favor the oak herringbone, for a luxurious and durable look:
2. Linens from Plover Organics: Although I have these in my own apartment in New York City, Plover's 100% organic cotton linens are made for life in the country.
3. A lot of cotton dhurries scattered about: Because Dhurries are easily washed, flat, and usually vegetable dyed or made of natural materials, they are perfect for mixing and matching. Madeline Weinrib carries my favorites:
4. Aga Stove:I had written about these a couple of months ago for the Poughkeepsie Journal, but really didn't realize quite how perfect and multi-functional they are for the country.
Aga’s process is unique in that there are no switches and dials (because once it’s installed and turned on, it’s always on) and the way the heat is transferred through the stove is gentle and consistent. This allows the user to cook and broil at the same time, while the thermostatic control maintains consistent temperatures.
5. Natural woven shades: How do you preserve the view during the day, while providing privacy in the evening?
Conrad makes woven shades to order out of sustainably harvested grasses and fibers.
Country living can be sustainable and still sophisticated.
