The beginning is knowing what the home wants to say
To decipher that, we work with the ingredients that are given to us. The architecture informs the initial decisions. How things move in the space, where different activities will be, what is most functional. We then look to the surrounding landscape. Is it a cityscape? Is it a waterfront home? Is it in the countryside? The landscape determines the environment, and we balance it accordingly within the home. Next is the narrative. The story. How is the space revealing itself to us? How does the light affect the mood and the feeling inside? From there it goes to the meaning.
What does this home mean to the client? What kind of life does our client want to lead there? And finally comes our favorite part; the magic. The magic comes to life through the colors, pattern, and texture of a Kati Curtis designed home. We take all of these ingredients and turn it into the perfect, refined space for our clients- expertly tailored for their lifestyle and vision. For us, a perfectly balanced home is proportionate. We play with color and pattern in a way that helps balance the proportions of a space. We don’t use color and pattern for the sake of being bold, but for telling a story. There has to be flow throughout the home.
A Kati Curtis designed home reads as one magical story throughout the home, with each room becoming a more interesting and depth filled chapter. We use color in each “chapter” to evoke a feeling. We love story telling and drama, but all within balance. Understanding the individual proportions of a space and knowing where color and pattern will have the right, and best, impact is key to our designs.
It’s about appropriately allocating color and pattern in a way that evokes the feeling you want to evoke, and creates the best impact. Sometimes it’s using a smaller scale pa0ern in an entry where it’s dark and moody, leading to a larger scale pattern in great room where it’s light and bright. Other times it’s taking advantage of a jewel box powder room and using bold color and print to take advantage of an otherwise overlooked moment.
We love a design challenge, and there’s always a challenge that has to be solved in a room. Whether it’s that the room is too big, or maybe too small, or the ceiling is too high, a challenge is there and we use design to solve it. It always leads to the just right of it all, the “Goldilocks Moment,” when you know it’s right. We are driven to find what will be perfect for that one room, that one beautiful space, that one extraordinary moment in a home. So when we have clients come to us saying, “I want to mix styles and family heirlooms in a more 21st century way, but I have no idea how”. That’s where we come in. Layering is our specialty, and we take a
unique approach to determining what fits best in the space and making it fit the aesthetic needs of our client.
We consistently use a mix of old and new, modern and vintage, created and collected to create the perfect balance. Sometimes it’s reupholstering a vintage chair in a modern fabric next to a modern side table. We take items with meaning to the client and incorporate them seamlessly into our designs. At the end of the day, we are always in pursuit of our “Goldilocks” finds. That perfect piece that is just right. We never compromise for the sake of finding something that works, but finding the exact right fit that pulls everything together.
That’s the Kati Curtis Design difference.
